The Skill of Element Shape Function in Numerical Methods

A concise and efficient algorithm is presented for deriving element shape functions in numerical methods from an arbitrary set of indepen -dent functions. Based on special one-dimensional interpolatory schemes, varieties of two- and three-dimensional interpolatory schemes are developed, which are useful for modelling singular behaviour. The shape functions are assumed to be analogous to Lagrange polynomials but including an exponential decay term so as to be appropriate for elements which extend to infinity.
