Zhou Zhuoren lived in the times without freedom, but he knew bow to turn his oppressive mental state into a free form(his familiar essays) of expression and thus molded his unique writing style. And moreover he did his best to soften the oppressive social reality into a free and relaxed mental world. His familiar essays reveal his inner world. The bitterness between the lines indicates cot only his attitude of "sweetening the bitterness of adverse circumstances" towards life, but also the limitation of his spritual freedom.
