Tracing a Distant Memory ──On the Similarities between Wang Anyi and Zhang Ailing as Shown in Changhengge

WANG Xiao-fang (Chinese Department, Suzhou Railway Teacher's College, Jiangsu Province 215009 )
Changhengge by Wang Anyi shows similarities with Zhang Ailing's novels. Changhengge is a novel which depicts the City of Shanghai though the life of a woman. It illustrates the main character Wang Qiyao by dwelling on the two themes of "the tenacity of life" and "the stability of life", and goes further to reach an understanding of the city. Such an approach agrees with the mental inclination of Zhang Ailing's novels in that both come from the feminine experience and memory, and express a profound feminine mentality.
