An Investigation into the Origin of Corresponding “Men in Charge of External Business/Women Internal Business” to “Men for Public Affairs/Women Private Affairs”:An Additional Discussion of Influence of Liang Qichao's and Guo Moruo's Gender Theory

DENG Yan;The School of Social Development,Huzhou Teachers College;
In the 1980's,Chinese scholars of women's history introduced the concept of"the public/private dualism" from Western feminism,which has now become"an important analytical tool"in current gender study in China.As the concept of"the public/private dualism"correponds to that of"men for public affairs/women for private affairs" or that of"men in charge of external business/women internal business",it almost instantly became popular in China.The reason why we could readily accept it was that both adopt dichotomy in form.Besides,it is also the result of gender theory accumulation in our country.In the author's opinion,there are two key steps:First,the scholars in the early twentieth century represented by Liang Qichao inherited such traditional political theories as"Jia Guo Tong Gou or the country and the family possess the same features"and"NǚZheng Guo Zhi or the country will be at peace when all women are fine".Meanwhile,they deliberately ignored the practical economic and political contributions of women in traditional ways.In this way,they successfully transformed"internal",which has abundant political implications,into"unemployed"(unpaid work)in the modern economic sense.Second,the radical scholars represented by Guo Moruo,who wanted to explain Chinese ancient history in accordance with Marxist historial outlook,had to suppress the unique importance of"individual family"in the"The Origin of the Family,Private Property and the State",so that the concept of"individual family"could in theory coexist harmoniously with the soical formation of a country based on clans in ancient China.Maybe,these are the origins of the Chinese scholars corresponding"male/public·female/private"with"male/external·female/internal",as well as the theoretical groundwork for"the public-private dualism"to become"an important analytical tool"in gender study in our country.
