Anxiety of Existence:A Study of“Bad Faith”in The Beast in the Jungle

KE Ying;School of Business,Suzhou University of Science and Technology;
Most critical attention to Henry James'The Beast in the Jungle is paid to Marcher,the hero,and the meaning of the"beast",while May,the heroine,who should also be well studied,is rarely addressed.In his anxiety of existence,Marcher becomes a self-contradictory actor on the stage,failing to face May's ready love and the possible happy life.On the other hand,as the only spectator of Marcher's performance,May experiences her psychological change from hope to despair,wasting her whole life in silent and vain wait.Marcher and May demonstrate"bad faith"in their different ways,but they still step towards the same ending of nothingness.
