Syntax in Systemic Functional Linguistics

ZHANG De-lu (School of Foreign Languages,Tongji University,Shanghai 200092,China)
Over the years, there have been developed two models of systemic functional grammar: Halliday's systemic functional grammar and Fawcett's Cardiff Grammar. The present paper is intended to study the relationship between them,so as to give a clearer picture of the syntactic study in this theory.I first present the two models of systemic functional grammar, and then study form, function and meaning in relation to the two models, and finally discuss the relationship between them.I have found that the concept of function is considered a relational concept, which may mean the relation between form and meaning and the relation between the form of language and its situational and sociocultural context. The difference between Halliday's systemic functional grammar and Fawcett's Cardiff Grammar mainly lies in the different relations that function represents in their models of grammar.
