Flame-Retardant Modification of Waterborne Polyurethane and Determination of Its Properties

The aliphatic isocyanate(isophorone diisocyanate,IPDI) and poly(1,4-butylene adipate)(Mw=1 000) were employed for the preparation of aqueous PU emulsion by using dihydroxymethyl malonic acid(DMPA) as the anionic stabilizer,which was further modified by using(N,N-dihydroxyethyl methylamine) diethyl-phosphite(DHMADP) as the flame-retardant component of hard segments.It was observed that the P content affected both the stability of emulsion and the mechanical performance of film made from the emulsion.When the flame retardant content increased from 0 to 6% relative to the total amount of PU,the stability of emulsion was decreased,correspondingly the tensile strength of PU film decreased and the elongation at break was increased to 3%,then decreased.Results of DSC/TG tests indicated that with the increase of flame retardant content,the thermal decomposition rate of PU film decreased,and the thermal decomposition temperature of both the soft segments and the hard segments increased.Compared with the decomposition temperatures(200 ℃,310 ℃) of soft and hard segments without flame retardant,the decomposition temperature of soft segment changed little when adding flame retardant 2%,3% 4% and 5%,but that of hard segment increased up to 425 ℃,and the LOI of it increased to 33%,34% and 33%.All these results indicated that the DHARDP was an effective flame retardant and its optimum dosage was between 2%~3%.
