A novel on-line detector for solid particles in natural gas pipelines under high pressure: A case study

To know well the content of solid particles in natural gas pipelines is essential to the type selection of filtering equipment and the programming of a reasonable operation scheme.The conventional off-line detection technology will burn time and be impossible to reflect the real-time content change of solid particles in the lines.On the other hand,the existing on-line detection technology will involve such a preposed decompressor of huge bulk which is complicated to operate;and in its actual application,due to the throttling action,liquid drops precipitate in the high-pressure lines,which will influence the on-line detection results.In view of this,a novel on-line detector is developed for solid particles in natural gas pipelines under high pressure.Abandoning the huge bulk of that decompressor,this new detector has a good performance of pressure resistance as well as some other advantages such as being simple in structure,easy to operate,portable to move,and so on.This novel on-line detector was applied to the measurement of solid particles content in the inlet and outlet lines of a high-pressure multitubular cyclone at a natural gas metering station in China.As a result,the particle sizes were measured as 1.34-3.40 μm,which was very close to the results of 1.36-2.55 μm measured by the off-line detector.In a word,this novel technology can not only rapidly and accurately detect the concentration of particles and particle size distribution but achieve the real-time monitoring of their variation in natural gas pipelines.
