Conditions of continental shale gas accumulation in China

Industrial production of shales in North America has been achieved most often in those marine sedimentary beds,while in China great breakthrough has been made in continental shales,the great potential of which has been gradually unveiled with the deepening of exploration practices.In view of this,this paper first analyzes the distribution features of the continental organic-matter-rich shales in China,and then makes a deep investigation into the basic geological condition and organic geochemical parameters.This study shows that there are good advantages for continental shale gas accumulation in China: huge cumulative thickness of shale reservoirs,various types of organic matters,rich reservoir space,favorable preservation condition,great resource abundance,and satisfactory ground condition.In conclusion,rich continental organic-matter-rich shales are mainly distributed in the Mes-Cenozoic strata in North China,Northeast China,Northwest and some parts of South China,where there are mature conventional oil and gas fields with enough data available and the ready-made infrastructures.From this aspect,the recovery and production of continental shale gas resources in China is cost-effective.Although the organic matter of continental organic-rich shales in China has a relatively low thermal degree of maturity,and shale gas and shale oil are symbiotic both in micro and macro,through the comparative analysis of the similarities and differences between shale oil and shale gas,the economic recoverable potential of continental shale gas is greater than that of shale oil.
