New understandings of exploration and development practices in tight sandstone gas reservoirs in Western Sichuan Depression

After decades of exploration and development,hydrocarbon resources in the positive structure belt of Western Sichuan Depression have been basically proved.But along with the increasing exploration difficulty,the negative structure belts,such as sags and slopes,will be important areas for seeking lithologic and stratigraphic gas reservoirs.Through a systematic study of hydrocarbon source and reservoirs,the geochemical characteristics and hydrocarbon generation potential of the Xujiahe Formation and Lower Jurassic source rocks in Western Sichuan Depression have been re-assessed.The following findings were concluded.First,the source rocks in the Upper Triassic Xujiahe Formation and Lower Jurassic are excellent for hydrocarbon generation,providing robust basis for the formation of medium-and large-sized gas fields.Second,the Jurassic sediments were derived from multiple sources and the geological conditions are favorable for the formation of large-scale shallow deltas and thus the Western Sichuan foreland basin is characterized by the presence of sand-rich successions.Third,the reservoir sandstones are generally tight and highly heterogeneous with high-quality reservoirs widely developed.Fourth,overpressure occurs generally in deep,medium and shallow strata,and the main driving force for gas migration is pressure differential between source rocks and reservoirs.Fifth,two hydrocarbon supply patterns,including netted and planar,exist in the study area.And finally,the formation of Jurassic gas reservoirs was controlled by three factors:adequate hydrocarbon source,favorable sedimentary/diagenetic facies,and proper spatial relationship between faults and carrier beds.In summary,it is conformed that the negative structures in Western Sichuan Depression possess the geological conditions for forming medium-and large-sized gas fields and are abundant in natural gas deposits.
