Monitoring of Urban Expanding of Nantong City by Remote Sensing in the Last 20 Years

On the basis of RS and GIS technology,urban spread of Nantong city over last two decades was studied.The results demonstrated that,the former major parts of the city were stabilized from 1984 to 2003 due to space limitation,and meanwhile,urbanization process in the peri-urban areas was accelerated.The modes of urban sprawl of city differed at different stages.At the first stage,the scattered towns and villages around the fringe of the city were rapidly urbanized.Then,the main blocks of city were connected with the urbanized peri-urban areas,and the new administrative and commercial centers were developed.According to the city planning,the designed Economy Development District would be mostly subjected to urbanization in the near future.The main cause of the sprawl of town was the advance of industrialization lever.Furthermore,by overlaying the distribution map of new built-up areas on the soil map of the region,it was shown that significant decrease of soil area formerly used as vegetable lands and farmlands in the peri-urban zone.
