Taking Northern Songnen Plain as research area, and the results of multi-objective geochemical survey as the data source, the background value and cumulative characteristics of soil heavy metals were studied with the method of multivariate statistics and geostatistics. The results showed that:(1) Compared with the background values measured in 1986,the background values of As,Cr,Cd,Cu,Ni,Pb and Zn increased, while they were significantly different among various quaternary landform types.(2) Based on the background values atthe whole region and the geological and geomorphological conditions, the contents of Hg,Cd and Cr were accumulatedin surface soil. However, the background value under the geological and geomorphological conditions could better reflect the accumulation of heavy metals in topsoil than that at the whole region.(3) The higher content of heavy metals was mainly concentrated in the middle and eastern regions, while the lower content was distributed in the southwest areaof Northern Songnen Plain.
