Fuzzy Sets, Solar Active Region Classification and Flare Prediction

Liu Xuzbao Li Wei(Beijing Observatory, Academia Sinica)  
400 examples of the solar active regions in 1980 are selected. Each of them concerns the following; physical quantities: the sunspot group class and total area, magnetic field class and maximum field strength, special structure of the active region, 3 cm radio flux of the active region, ratio of 3 cm to 10 cm flux of it. These quantities constitute the general vector of every example. Then, we divided the 400 examples into 14 kinds of active regions with Fuzzy Sets analyses.Based on Fuzzy classification, the flare predictions (if flares of importance 1 or 1 appear on solar disk on the next day) were hold for 12 days (the midsts of every moath) in 1981. The result is encouraging.
