A Research Review of U.S. Policy towards Taiwan from 1949 to 1950 from the Perspective of the “Lost China/Opportunity” Academic Debate

Zhong Yicheng;
Over the past half-century, the study of U.S. policy towards Taiwan from 1949 to 1950 has undergone a process from a political orientation to a normal academic discussion, accompanied by the intensification of scholars' different point of views. Although the current academic circles give different estimates of the degree of U.S. easing to China, they generally acknowledge that there exists a dynamic anti-correlation between U.S. policies towards China and Taiwan. It will be an important task for scholars who are interested in this issue to clarify the complicated relationship between the United States and the "Taiwan independence movement" by using the "middle-level historical data" which can reflect the activities of American diplomats in Taiwan, so as to present the other side of the "hidden behind the scenes" of the United States on the Taiwan issue. On the other hand, a systematic review of the U.S. policy towards Taiwan from 1949 to 1950 will help us reveal more comprehensively and profoundly the complexity of the origin of the Taiwan issue and the international pusher behind it.
