Effects of CNTs Contents on the Mechanical Properties of CNTs/Al Composites

Carboxylation was used to enhance the dispersion of CNTs.The 0~2.0% CNTs were added to Al matrix by powder metallurgy method.The mechanical properties of as-sintered and as-hot extruded CNTs/Al composites were tested at room temperature.The results show that the mechanical properties of CNTs/Al composites are increased with increasing in CNTs content.The tensile strength of CNTs/Al composites with 1.0% CNTs reaches 158 MPa,which is 40% higher than that of pure Al(113 MPa)prepared by the same conditions.For CNT content less than 1.0%,the hardness,yield strength and tensile strength of CNTs/Al are all proportional to the square roots of the CNTs contents,indicating that the main strengthening mechanism is characteried by the CNTs dispersion strengthening.
