Preparation of Al-Cu-Zr Bulk Metallic Glasses and Its Compression and Impact Fracture Mechanism

Al-Cu-Zr bulk metallic glasses(BMGs)were prepared by vacuum arc melting and copper mold casting.The glass-forming ability(GFA)and compression as well as impact strength of Cu54.5-xZr45.5 Alx(x =3,5,7)BMGs were analyzed.The results reveal that,with the increase of Al content in Cu54.5-xZr45.5 Alx,the thermal stability of BMGs is increased firstly and then decreased,and the amorphous formation ability with 5% Al content exhibits desirable.The increase of Al content in Cu54.5-xZr45.5 Alxis beneficial to enhancing material compression and impact fracture stress,and alloy with 7%Al has the maximum fracture stress.The effects of microalloying on strength of the alloy with7%Al can be ignored.Both the compression and impact fracture process of the alloy include two stages of elastic deformation and fracture.The local melting phenomenon occurs at the fracture surface during the impact process,finally the metal fiber and molten droplet morphology can be formed,while the materials only soften at the fracture during the compression process.Due to the larger impact strain rate,the elastic deformation energy accumulated in the specimen is the larger,which makes the fracture stress of the impact specimen generally higher than that of the compressed ones.
