Formation of R-α′-Sialons and Phase Relations in the Systems Si_3N_4AlN-R_2O_3 (R=Nd,Sm,Gd,Dy,Er and Yb)

Six subsolidus phase diagrams of the Si_3N_4-AlN-R_2O_3(R=Nd,Sm,Gd,Dy,Er andYb)systems were established.Within these systems α-Si_3N_4 forms a limited solid solut-ion with each 0.1R_2O_3:0.9AlN respectively.The solubility of R in per cell of α-Si_3N_4s.s.is extended with increasing the atomic numbers of rare earth elements.Anequilibrium exists between β-Si_3N_4 and R-α~′-Sialon s.s.at 1750℃.These subsolidusphase diagrams may have considerable significance for the use of rare earth oxides likeyttria as sintering additives in fine ceramics.In addition,a new compound Nd_2AlO_3N with the same tetragonal structure asSm_2AlO_3N,was,found.
