An Additional Experiment on Boad of SETESC—Effects of the Space Radiation on Functional Oxide Crystals

An additional experiment on board of Scientific Exploration and TechnologicalExperimental Satellite of China(SETESC)was carried out to evaluate the influe-nee of the space radiation on the functional oxide materials.The comparative mea-surements between the samples on board of SETESC for eight days and the contrastsamples on the ground showed that the optical absorption of the iron-(?)oped BismuthGermanate(BGO)crystal was slightly increased,and its radiation-induced thermo-luminescent response was seen after being on board,futhermore the peakpositionand the shape of the thermoluminescent response was very similar to that of theultraviolet light-induced samples.These experimental results showed that the space-radiation-induced color centers with certain concentrations had been formed in theBGO crystal.This was also confirmed by the results measured with LiF thermolu-minescent dosimeter.The measureable change of the physical properties of the oxidematerials stayed for such a short period in the space shows that the radiation-resi-stance treatments for various functional oxide materials and devices which will beused in the space aircraft must be considered for the long-term staying in space.
