Effects of Phase Transformation on Thermal and Mechanical Properties of A-Y-TZP Ceramics

The effects of Y_2O_3 content on the thermal and mechanical properties of A-Y-TZP ceramics have been investigated.The influence of monoclinic→tetragonal phasetransformation of ZrO_2 on the anomalous temperature dependence of thermal parame-ters for TZP ceramics has been examined.On the basis of systematic experiments,it can be confirmed that the phase transformation of ZrO_2 plays an important rolein improving mechanical properties of ceramics.It is found that the stress inducedtetragonal→monoclinic phase transformation makes (?)ontributions not only to toug-hening but to strengthening,the transformation induced microcracks are helpfulto toughening but detrimental to strengthening,and the existance of tetragonalZrO_2 under constraint,which has not transformed by means of applied stress,seemsto play a strengthening role.
