Improvement of Alkali Resistance of Glasses by New Gel-derived Coatings

Alkali resistant coatings on silicate glasses have been successfully developed via Sol-gelroute in the system of BaO-TiO_2-SiO_2.The stable solutions suitable for dip coating pro-cess have been prepared,whose viscosities remain nearly constant for a long period of time(20days).The infrared spectroscopic studies indicated that acetic acid is active in the coor-dination chemistry of the titanium and their ligands are very stable,which prolong the timeof gelation of the solutions.The Si-O-Ti linkage appears in the initial solutions.The verysmall weight loss of gels above 420℃ is due to the removal of organic groups and there is theformation of oxide network.The detection of the TiO_2 content in the films after the alkalineattack was performed by the X-ray fluorescence analysis (XFA) to evaluate the chemical dura-bility of the coatings.With the suitable choise of compositions,withdrawal speed and bakingconditions,good coatings on glasses could be obtained,which can protect the surface of silicateglass substrates against 1N NaOH attack at 60℃ for a long period of time.
