Wear Mechanism of Cr_2O_3 Coating in Inorganic Salt Solutions

The friction and wear properties of Cr_2O_3 coating in inorganic salt solutions were studiedby using a block-on-ring tester at ambient condition.The friction coefficient is ranked fromhighest to lowest in the order:NaCl,NaNO_3,Na_2SO_4,Na_2B_2O_7,Na_3PO_4,for Na salt solutions;NaCl,MgCl_2,ZnCl_2,AlCl_3,for chloride salt solutions.The wear volume of the block isranked in descending order as follows:NaCl,Na_2B_2O_7,Na_3PO_4,NaNO_3,Na_2SO_4,for Nasalt solutions;NaCl,AlCl_3,MgCl_2,ZnCl_2,for chloride salt solutions.The optical micrographsand XPS analyses of the worn surfaces indicate that the wear mechanism of Cr_2O_3 coatingin inorganic salt solutions is a combination of several wear modes involving microfracture,tribochemical and abrasive wear.
