Experiments on Influence of Magnetic Field on Distribution of Temperature in KNbO_3 Melt

The effect of magnetic field on temperature distribution in KNbO_3 melt was exper-imental studied. By utilizing a special temperature measurement technique, the KNbO_3 melttemperature distribution in a 2mm diameter platinum crucible was measured under 0, 70, 117,135mT transverse magnetic field respectively. The results show that the temperature gradientalong crucible radius decreases with magnetic intensity increasing, especially, the temperaturegradient close to crucible-melt interface where the buoyancy- driven convection is the main convec-tion form decreases greatly. It may implie that magnetic field can damp up the buoyancy-drivenconvection in KNbO_3 melt.
