Stress Design of Ceramic Grain Boundary
Guo Jingkun(Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences Shanghai 200050 China)
Ceramic researchers are often in a puzzle about the brittleness problem of ceramic materials, and have exerted more efforts to solve this problem these last twenty years. Although researchs on strengthening and toughenting of multiphase composed ceramics and ZrO2 phase transformation toughening have made great progress, the brittleness of ceramic materials has not been essentially solved. The author proposes that stress states in grain boundaries of ceramic materials can be designed;through stress interaction, a mechanism of transfering, consuming or absorbing applied energy can be formed, so that the brittleness problem can be basically solved.
