Exploring the Principal Professional Development and Training System of Singapore

There are mainly three processes in the principal professional developmentand training system of Singapore. First,school leader selection is quite systematic andstrict,in which teachers with leadership potential are identified through a series of evalua-tions and tests,and they become principal candidates only after both finishing relevanttraining and passing the interviews. Second,the pre-service training is long-term,diverseand challenging,including the leadership modules,group learning,Creative Action Projectand international and industry visits. Third,the in-service learning and development is con-tinuous and dependent on the sound supporting system,including Mentoring Scheme,con-tinuing education such as program of Master of Educational Management,workshops,semi-nars,conferences,overseas study visits and Sabbatical Scheme. This principal developmentsystem emphasizes high-quality access,the development of transformational leadership,collaborative learning,external resources and coexistence of challenges and incentives,from which we can learn a lot.
