Gong Guixun;the University of Science and Engineering;Xiangtan University;
An Etymological Glossary of Selected Modern Chinese Words includes the loanwords from the beginning of 19th Century to mid-20th Century. There are many kinds of foreign words in the dictionary, which are beyond the commonly-classified five categories and will be divided into eight categories. In the process of translation, the number of the syllables, the structure of the words and the meaning of the words are all naturalized by Chinese. Some of them are even influenced by Chinese dialects. Due to the influence of the Chinese characteristics, the times and the social-cultural mind, the English loanwords from the dictionary develops from transliteration to liberal translation, and the word usage proceeds from abnormality to normality and from colloquialism to elegance.
