Biomedical Applications of Rare Earth Upconversion Nanomaterials

Compared with the conventional fluorescent materials,rare earth upconversion fluorescent nanomaterials is an ideal material for biomedical application by using near infrared laser as an excitation light source,which owns many unique advantages,such as deep light penetration,minimal photodamage to living organisms and low background autofluorescence.In addition,with superior photostability,long lifetime,narrow emission spectra and good biocompatibility,the application of rare earth upconversion fluorescent nanomaterials has been dramatically expanded in biodectection,bioimaging and tumor therapy.This review focuses on the recent development of upconversion fluorescent nanomaterials in biodectection,bioimaging and disease therapy,as well as gives an analysis of the advantages of upconversion fluorescent nanomaterials with the comparation of the conventional fluorescent materials and the exploration of upconversion fluorescent nanomaterials as multifunctional nanoscale carriers for these biomedical application.Finally,we discuss the challenges and opportunities in the development of upconversion fluorescent nanomaterials in biomedical application.
