Reflection on the Relationship between Marxism and Confucianism over the Last 100 Years

Hu Dongcai;School of Marxism,Central South University;
The relationship between Marxism and Confucianism has been one of the important issues in the development of Chinese ideology and culture since the May 4th Movement. The German scholar August Thalheimer first made it academic. From 1930s to 1940s,research on this issue formed a peak. The Marxism theory and method,which had been made substantial progress,were applied to the analysis of inheritance of traditional culture by Chinese Marxists from Mao Zedong to Zhang Dainian and Hou Wailu. From 1950s to1970s,related research showed slow-moving because of the political situation,meanwhile,foreign research made quite creative progress and Dou Zongyi's research was the representative,his workings demonstrated the similarity and difference between Marxism and Confucianism and somewhat combination points. Driven by"culture hit"and other favorable factors,the problem of relationship had been taken seriously and showed a special trend in 1980s to 1990s. The research direction made by Zhang Dainian and Dou Zongyi was to be expanded. Since the new century,related research has moved forward with all kinds of attention,however,the combination of Marxism and Confucianism is creatively promoted,and responds to the requirements of the current era.
