Synthesis of hierarchical calcium carbonate microspheres

Hierarchical calcium carbonate microspheres were synthesized by the solvothermal method with calcium acetate[Ca(CH_3COO)_2] and urea [CO(NH_2)_2] as calcium sources in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP).The morphology and polymorphs of the products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and X-ray diffraction(XRD).The results revealed that the hierarchical calcium carbonate microspheres with uniform size and good dispersibility were prepared in the presence of 4 g PVP and the polymorph of the products was calcite.PVP played an important role in the morphology and polymorphs of calcium carbonate.The stereochemical conformation of PVP induced the nucleation and growth of amorphous calcium carbonate and favored the formation of rhombohedral calcite.The bridging and templating effects of PVP promoted the formation of hierarchical calcium carbonate microspheres.
