A study on Chinese EFL learners' acquisition of "...and..." chunks as the function of chunk types

ZHENG Chao(Research Center of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics,Guangdong University of Foreign Studies,Guangzhou 510420,China)YUAN Shihong(School of Foreign Languages,Lanzhou University of Technology,Lanzhou 730050,China)
This paper investigates how Chinese EFL learners at different proficiency levels acquire a specific form of chunks — "...and..." chunks — which are classified into five types according to the cultural connotation they carry.Based on the findings, the paper makes a comparative study between the chunk knowledge of Chinese EFL learners and that of native speakers of English with the chunk type and L2 proficiency as independent variables. The results show that the effect of chunk types is significant, while that of proficiency level is less consistent.Chinese EFL learners of all levels have usually mastered much fewer chunks than native speakers, especially heavily culture-loaded chunks. This phenomenon can be attributed to the tendency of attaching more importance to language than culture and resorting more to analysis than synthesis in today's EFL teaching and learning in China.
