Comprehensive experiment on Cherenkov-like radiation

In analogy to the Cherenkov radiation in conventional particle physics,a comprehensive experiment on optical Cherenkov-like radiation was designed.The sample was a single-mode microfiber fabricated by drawing a commercial optical fiber.When the microfiber was immersed into PDMS liquid with larger refractive index,the light would leak out through the leaky radiation process.The students were required to derive the formulas according to the given background and the knowledge they have acquired.In addition,the students should establish the experiment setup,observe the optical Cherenkov radiation,and measure the refractive indices and sensitivities of the liquids with different volume ratios.The experiment project included basic theoretical derivation,establishing experiment setup,data measurement and analysis,which could be used to evaluate the comprehensive physics level of the undergraduates.
