Measuring the refractive index of flat glass by Newton ring instrument

A method of measuring the refractive index of a flat glass by Newton ring was introduced.The flat glass was placed between the half mirror and the moving-measuring microscope of the Newton ring instrument vertical to the light path.When changing the flat glass inclination,a horizontal displacement of the interference fringes could be observed.By measuring the relation between the horizontal displacement and the inclination angle,the refractive index could be obtained by data fitting.The key of this method is the accurate measurement of the inclination angle and the horizontal micro displacement.In the experiment,an angle measuring instrument assembled by using the existing conditions of the laboratory was used to measure the inclination angle,and a high precision moving-measuring microscope was used to read the micro displacement,then the refractive index was measured precisely.
