The Development of Sludge Reduction Technologies

The capital and O/M costs of sludge treatment and disposal account for 40 - 65 % of the total ones of a wastewater treatment plant, and the final sludge disposal has become more and more difficult with the potential pollution to the environment as well as the limitation of the land area available for the disposal, which makes it mecessary to reduce the sludge production and disposal amounts. The novel technologies and processes developed and researched recently in the world were introduced in this paper, such as: Grazing/Bacterial Perdition technology could reduce over 60% of excess sludge production, even zero excess sludge production and discharge were realized by submerged biofilm process developed by the authors; Bioaugmentation by dosing special bacterial species reduced 16% of sludge production; Dosing enzyme discomposed the large molecular organic compounds to smaller ones, which was easy to be absorbed and utilized by bacteria and hence facilitated the bacteria increase, by which the sludge production was reduced 50%; Besides, ultrasonic technology, ozonation and novel Cambi process were all exhibited the capability of sludge reduction.
