Engineerng Measures for Increasing Stability against Sliding along the Base of Concrete Gravity Dams on Rock Foundation

A suggestion that the stress state of the most unfavourable point for shear on the dam bas remains lower than the yield point is presented as the creteria of stability, and a new concept, the real elastic shear strength is adopted. The stress distribution and stability against sliding under elastic state along the base of concrete gravity dams are discussed, and the engineering measures for improving stress and increasing stability against sliding are proposed. It is proved that the effect of the fillet and the man-made crack at dam heel for decreasing tensile stress around the heel is obvious.
