Investigation into the Safety Factor of Sliding Stability for Concrete Gravity-type Dam

The stress state of the most unfavourable point for shear but still lower than the yield point on a dam base to be taken as the criterion of stability is suggested. A new concept—the real elastic shear strength, is adopted. The theoretical formulas for investigating the sliding stability along the base of a concrete dam on rock foundation are derived, and the method and calculating formulas for determining their safety factors are proposed. It is proved that variable safety factor should be adopted according to variable ratio of the modulus between the concrete and the foundation rock and different heights and types of dams. The higher the dam or the harder the foundation rock, the smaller the safety factor should be.
