Calculating the Critical Load of a Column by Hermite's Difference Method With Variable Step Length

The Hermite's difference method with variable step length is first derived and used to compute the critical load of a variable cross section column. The new difference formulation contains both values and derivatives of the unknown displacement function at the nodes of a discrete system. So higher accuracy can be reached on relatively crude grid compared with the finite difference method. The example shows that effectiveness and advantage of the method is remarkable.
