Study of the Macro-Shear strength of rock masses

LAI Guo_wei, LU Shu_yuan (School of Water Resources and Hydropower, Wuhan University, Wuhan 430072, China)  
By the application of the theory of random fields and precolation theory, the paper deduced theoretical formulas for the upper and the lower limit of the macro_shear strength of rock masses which just need a finite group of shear strength test results gained by the small specimens commonly used in engineering. The result shows that the macro_shear strength of rock masses is in values between the arithmetic mean of the whole small dimensional shear strengths and the average of these small dimensional strengths which are less than the population mean.
