Optimization of Three Gorges Project navigation condition

To optimize the navigation condition under the change of water and sediment inflow,impounding water ahead of original schedule of the Three Gorges Project(TGP) is necessary.It will not only improve the water current condition for navigation,but also increase sedimentation silting in reservoir to harm the navigation in fluctuating back water area.The influence on navigation condition of riffles at fluctuating back water area under operation of upstream dams is analyzed by using an unsteady 1D model at first;the result demonstrates that impounding water ahead of original schedule won't tamper the navigation condition of fluctuating back water area.On the basis of this result,the benefit of impounding water ahead of original schedule to navigation of TGP is analyzed detailedly.
