Flexural behavior of cutoff wall of Three Gorges Project's Phase II cofferdam based on measured deformation

The primary objective of this paper is to make a feedback analysis for the flexural behavior of the cutoff wall of the Three Gorges Project's Phase Ⅱ cofferdam based on the measured deformations and to evaluate the safety of the cutoff wall since the deformation was obvious during its operation period.The cutoff wall can be supposed to be an elastic beam in an elastic ground by analyzing the measured deformations.Hence,it is assumed that the mechanical behavior is same with an elastic beam.The deformation along the height and the moment of sections are calculated,respectively.Then the tensile and compression stresses can be calculated.It is found that the bending moment of the cutoff wall increases with the increase of its elastic modulus.The maximal tensile stress is less than 0.34 MPa,0.479 MPa and 1.027 MPa when the elastic modulus is 500 MPa,700 MPa and 1500 MPa respectively.It is shown that the cutoff wall is safe.The most critical part is in the bottom of the cutoff wall based on the bending moment and stress distribution diagrams;and the stress distribution in the wall is similar with cantilever beam.
