Two strains of bacteria, M-Sm-1612and St-Sm-9021, with peritrichous flagella,produce metachromatic granules and poly-β-hydroxybutric acid granules within thecells. Conspicuous slime is formed on Star-key's medium. Yellow pigment, similar toβ-carotene, is produced, especially on po-tato plugs. No fluorescent pigment is pro-duced. They are aerobic bacteria with respira-tory metabolism. Catalase is produced butno oxidase. Glucose, mannose, xylose, lac-tose, sucrose, maltose, trehalose and dextrinare oxidized to produce acids but no gas. Noacid is produced from arabinose, fructose,galactose, raffinose, inulin, rhamnose, gly-cerol, adonitol, inositol or salicin. Nitrateis reduced. Litmus milk is peptonized, re-duced and coagulated by acid produced.Gelatin or starch is not attacked. Tndole isnot produced. Hydrogen sulfide is produ-ced. M. R. and VP tests and citrate utiliza-tion test are negative. Growth occurs atand below 37℃ but do not at 44℃. Growthoccurs in medium containing 1% but not4% NaCl. No urease, phenylalanine dea-minase, decarboxylases of ornithine andlysine or DNase is detected. Nitrogenaseis produced. Arginine dihydrolase is pro-duced by St-Sm-9021, but not by M-Sm-1612. The organisms in question are notidentical with any known bacteria and desig-nated as a new species--Flavobacteriumoryzae sp. nov. These two strains havebeen deposited in Type Culture Collectionin Institute of Microbiology, Academia Sini-ca. St-Sm-9021 has been numbered as AS1.1585 and M-Sm-1612 as AS 1.1584.
