Application Research on TCP/IP over Satellite Link

The development of the Internet requires more and more bandwidth the existing terrestrial networks cannot satisfy.Therefore, satellite IP network becomes a hot topic at present.This paper analyzes the TCP mechanism and the reason TCP suffers from efficiency loss over a satellite link.Some of the inherent features of satellite network such as large propagation delay, high bit error rate and network asymmetry impact improvement of TCP performance.Three methods for improving TCP over satellite link are analyzed in the paper: 1) link layer solutions ; 2) end to end solutions; 3) connection splitting proxies based on protocol spoofing.
