“Love” and “Eugenics”:“Theory of Civilization” in 1920's China

Based on the analysis of the debate about eugenics and love between Pan Guangdan and Zhou Jianren in 1920 s, this paper examines the characteristics of the debate on the Chinese eugenics and love.Although the two scholar were affected by British demographic knowledge and Ellis "psychology of Sex",but in love and inheritance, the national characteristics and the universality of the theory they had a different choices. That is, the conservative Pan Guangdan attaches great importance to ethnic characteristics, emphasizing the elite education, genetic factors and early marriage, against free love; and progressive tendency of Zhou Jianren in support of free love, more emphasis on environmental factors than genetic. But this kind of law relating to support "negative eugenics", although Zhou has a socialist ideology, but also could not get rid of "the framework of national eugenics". The characteristics and the same period of sexual and reproductive related understanding of Japanese Socialist progressives or the Soviet Union has obvious differences, is characteristic of Chinese new knowledge of people in 1920's,the reason is that the development of linear thinking, they can not escape from the depths of their thoughts, the theory of evolution.
