Research progress on pharmacological effects of policosanol

Policosanol is a mixture of long chain aliphatic alcohols originally derived from purified sugar cane wax,which mainly contains octacosanol.It can protect myocardium or brain against ischemic injury,lower plasma cholesterol level,reduce platelet aggregation,and inhibit lipid peroxidation,smooth muscle cell proliferation and angiogenesis.It shows impressive safety and tolerance.This paper reviews the research progress on pharmacological effects of policosanol.
