Application of MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry in clinical microbiology laboratory

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry(MALDI-TOF MS) recently moved into clinical diagnostic microbiology laboratory.This review summarized the detection principle and characteristics of MALDI-TOF MS technology,in addition to its application in clinical microbiology identification,bacterial typing,identity analysis and drug resistance.Using MALDI-TOF MS technology not only significantly reduced the turnaround time in clinical microbiological analysis,improved the diagnosis of infectious diseases and rationalized the use antimicrobial drugs,but also laied the foundation for the automation of clinical microbiology laboratory.
