Research advances of growth factors in cartilage repair

Articular cartilage injury and degeneration, caused by a variety of reasons, is a common disease in clinic and lack of effective therapy so far. Yet with the development of tissue engineering, a new method is gradually applied for the cartilage renovation. Growth factor, as a basic factor of cartilage tissue engineering, have been a hot spot in recent researches, since it plays a significant role in not only chondrogenesis but also the formation of matrix and metabolism of cartilage chondrocyte. This article reviews the current advances of transforming growth factor-β, bone morphogenetic protein, insulin growth factor to find ideal growth factors as well as their combinations, in order to promote the cartilage renovation.
