Granular Pseudo-Fluid Large-Eddy Simulation Study of Aeolian Sand Transport Near a Bed Surface

Three dimensional transport of gas-solid two-phase aeolian sand was simulated based on coupling of gas-phase large-eddy simulation(LES)and pseudo-fluid model where the kinetic theory for granular flow(KTGF)forms the basis for the turbulence modeling in the solid phase. The vertical profile of the mean horizontal velocity,the concentration and the horizontal rootmean-square(RMS)velocity fluctuation of blown sand near the surface of sand bed were analyzed statistically at the same free-stream wind velocity.The distributions of different statistical parameters obtaining from simulation and experiment were compared.The results show that the simulating model can reveal the blowing sand field characteristics quite well.The same distribution trends of statistical parameters are found for computational results with two different drag models in dilute aeolian sand transport.Within the saltation layer,the mean horizontal velocity of blown sand increases with height,but the concentration decreases with an increase in height.The horizontal RMS velocity fluctuation shows a typical single peak in the lower part of the saltation layer.The similar changing trends are obtained from simulating and relative literature data.The actual choice for the value of the restitution coefficient plays the key role in revealing the intensity of sand velocity fluctuation.
