Thalamic connection of the primary motor area and dorsal premotor area in primate

Liu Jian, Zhang Qiaojun, Feng Jie, Xu Linping, Guo Beichuan (Department of Physiology, Medical School of Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an 710061, China)
Objective To observe the thalamic origin of the primary motor area (M1) and dorsal premotor area (PMd). Methods Two retrograde tracers were injected into M1 and PMd in monkeys, respectively. Results The fibers of thalamic ventral lateral nucleus, oral part (VLo), ventral medial nucleus (VM), ventroposterolateral nucleus, oral part (VPLo), ventral lateral nucleus, caudal part (VLc), central median nucleus (CM), central lateral nucleus (CL) and ventroposteromedial nucleus (VPM) projected to M1. The fibers of the thalamic ventral lateral nucleus, oral part (VLo), ventroposterolateral nucleus, oral part (VPLo), ventral lateral nucleus, caudal part (VLc) and medial dorsal nucleus (MD) projected to PMd.Conclusion M1 and PMd have different thalamic origins, some which are separate and some overlap; the cerebellar and basal ganglia affect their activities by the different thalamic nuclei.
