Effects of bifidobacteria on cytokine production and cytotoxicity by peritoneal macrophages of nude mice

Aim To explore the regulative effect of Bifidobacteria adolescence on macrophage functions. Methods The interleukin 1, tumor necrosis factor αand nitric oxide(NO) levels produced by peritoneal macrophages of nude mice were separately detected by mouse thymocyte proliferation test,L929 cell killing method in vitro and Griess reagent, after Bifidobacteria adolescence were injected peritoneally into the nude mice. Tumoricidal activity of the macrophages in vitro was also observed at the same time. Results The IL 1, TNF αand NO levels secreted from peritoneal macrophages of nude mice were 0.55±0.024(A value),(165±41)×103U/L and(53±6)μmol/L in experimental group respectively; they were 0.34±0.021(A value),(12±6)×103U/L and (31±13)μmol/L respectively in control group. They were significantly higher in experimental group than those in control group (P0.01). Simultaneously the tumoricidal activity of the macrophages in vitro was also markedly promoted(P0.01). Conclusion Bifidobacteria adolescence could activate macrop hages to secrete a lot of cytotoxic effectors and enhanced its tumoricidal activity.
