Endoscopic and clinical study of AIDS patients complicated with fungal esophagitis

SUN Cheng-min,LI Ping,SHI Xiao-hong, et al. (Beijing Ditan Hospital, Beijing 100015, China)
Objective To explore clinical and endoscopic features of AIDS patients complicated with fungal esophagitis so as to help to diagnose and prevent opportunistic infection within hospitals. Methods Retrospective study was conducted among 716 AIDS patients admitted to our hospital from 1995 to 2008 who were confirmed as concurrent fungal esophagitis by clinical ,endoscopic and pathological diagnosis. Results Thirty one AIDS patients displayed varying degrees of esophageal mucosal hyperemia, edema, diffuse white spot or flake pseudo membrane under endoscopy ,of whom 6 were complicated with esophagus ulcer; their CD+4 T lymphocyte counts were all 200 / mm3, and fungal hyphae or spores were detected by pathological examination. Conclusion Complications with fungal esophagitis among AIDS patients are attributed mainly to HIV's direct invasion, impaired immune function and opportunistic infections. Fungal esophagitis is directly related with CD+4 T lymphocyte counts
