THE EFFECT OF SPECIES PROPERTIES ON MASS EXTINCTION
Zhang Jianping Yang Xiangning (China Universit y of Geosciences)
The possible effect of biologic properties of species on mass extinction has been discussed in terms of population ecology, rate of evolutionary turnover and rates of speciation and extinction. Data from fusulinids, ammonoids corals and brachiopods indicate that the "anti-catastrophe ability" is directly proportional to their areas of geographic distribution, and correlated reversely with their rates of evolution. The fates of organisms which are in their different evolutionary stages may differ from each other in mass extinctions.
