Benzene exhibits no chemical interaction with clean or pre-oxidised Mg(0001) surfaces. However, transient oxygen O-(s) which exists during the oxidation of Mg(0001) surfaces can dehydrogenate benzene into chemisorptive hydrocarbon fragments; some of the carbon atoms being oxidised into CO and surface carbonate CO32-.
